Yesterday I had the pleasure of interviewing a new kid to the acting game. Roby Lee. After desperately searching for ways to uncover the truth about the Silent Hill 2 Movie I found him on IMDB and then went on a web-search to track him down to talk to him. Lucky for all of us I found him and he had more than Silent Hill to talk about! Oh yea, and there is a Teen Titans movie in the works. ya know, if you care about that sort of thing. ;-) Read the interview here.
Inform8n: Tell us a little about yourself (when did you begin acting, what do you do for fun, etc)?
Roby Lee: Well, I grew up in Michigan for the early parts of my childhood, was moving around a lot, in between a crucial custody battle between my parents... I have 2 sisters. But I began acting when I was about 8 or 9, my first big role was in a play-adaptation of HARRY POTTER at a Acting Camp/School in Oklahoma City called ART WORKS... it was a lot of fun, I got to play Harry Potter!
Roby Lee: And for fun, I like to hang out with my close friends, and my family of course. Go to the movies, I watch a lot of Horror, and I play a lot of PS2.
Inform8n: What are some of your favorite PS2 games?
Roby Lee: Anything that has to do with Horror! I'm a horror nut. I love being scared, so pretty much games like, Resident Evil and Silent Hill, of course! I think those games, and films, stuff with Zombies and creatures, they give me my learning ability, for acting and stuff, and they are fun, so yeah! Silent Hill and Resident Evil def. top my favorite PS2 games.
Inform8n: You mentioned some of your acting you did when you were younger... How did a normal guy like yourself from Michigan get started in the Hollywood scene? AKA how did you break into "the business"?
Roby Lee: Well, my Aunt... she inspired me to go for my dream, which is acting. And she, was an actress herself, she had done a horror movie and a few others, back in the 80s. And I decided to start auditioning here in Michigan, for indie films, never got the role. I mean, I have no real connections, I have no agent or anything, I just get into these things by hard work and, as my friends put it... luck! I am currently undergoing the process of being signed with an agency, so that's good for me. But really, I haven't broken into the business, just yet... but soon you will see! A friend of mine is about to direct a horror movie next year, and asked me to come on board and I think this will be very good for me. No body from Michigan really does anything like this, except, Madonna? Ha, but its good because I'm really hoping to help encourage people here to go out and do whatever! There is so much talent here, bands and theatre-wise... I'm surprised many of my friends aren't doing what I am!
Inform8n: Excellent. Can you tell us a little about your current project/projects?
Roby Lee: Yes! Well, I'll start with the small stuff... right now while I'm getting ready to finish school for good, then move back to CA in 2008, I'm working on some comedy. My friends tell me I should do that, and pretty much people anywhere I go. I can see it, so comedy is really something you may see me breakthrough in, someday, but it's nothing major, I'm only going to do local comedy clubs in MI for fun, and for cash! And now for the "big" stuff, a friend of mine is working on a horror film, and it's gone through so many title changes I can't even remember what it was first called... but it's going to be very indie... very strange, and yes, I do play one of the "bad" guys, so for my first on-screen role, I'm very excited. I don't really know a lot more, other than were filming in some Michigan towns, and then rest will film in Ohio... also other cast I cannot name right now, a lot of it is still going through phases and trying to get ready for filming in 2008, early 2008 hopefully! So I'll keep announcing updates as they come along, on my Myspace page!
Inform8n: Now for the meat and potatoes of the interview that we'd like to talk about. You were attached to the second Silent Hill movie on the IMDB. can you tell us how exactly you were attached? What role were you in talks to star in?
Roby Lee: Ahh, Silent Hill, Imdb... gotta love them both... But honestly Jack, I love Silent Hill more! ha! Ok so, here is the answer to put this all at rest. I was in the process of being looked at for an audition. Can't say, whom, what, where, when, why... by law, I am legally not allowed to give out any of that kind of information... But I have NOT yet auditioned for Silent Hill 2, all I know is that I am going to be set up with one. By this, there was a tape involved, someone found a video I did, and it was great because it just, went from there. Anywho, next thing I know, I was attached to star in it... but that was because I told someone I shouldn't have, that I was going to be set up for an audition. So blah blah, things went from there, I have an Imdb page, people are doing some MAD talk on there... I knew it was going to happen. People do stuff like that all the damn time, I mean come on, it's the IMDB, largest movie database in history! Being a user of the message boards, I check on what people say... it's funny. But no, I am not yet officially involved with Silent Hill 2. I haven't read any of the script, but I do know the plot line, I do know the characters, and I will say this as a promise to fans... you will NOT be disappointed. Even if I don't get the role, I still am always going to be a fan of this franchise. The movie is ironically, one of my favorites, so kudos to this movie and to the fans for being so supportive of it. I have all the confidence that I will do my best and who knows, maybe you guys will see me walking through the foggy town of Silent Hill, in 2009!
Also I'm just going to add, that plot outline on the Imdb, for SILENT HILL 2, is VERY false. Silent Hill 2, will not have a character named Brett Cartland and Kara, it is just complete BS someone would write that. Besides, that plot outline is horrible too!
Inform8n: I know you said you didn't get a look at the script... Do you know who is set to direct/produce/script this upcoming sequel? I know that the writer/director from the first Silent Hill Film (Christopher Gans and Roger Avery respectively)... any idea who's filling their shoes?
Roby Lee: I did not see the script, but I do know that Roger Avary is currently writing one, so I was told by Sony. And as far as producers and director, Don Carmoody is back on board, producing of course. And what fans wanna know, is who is directing I'm sure... fact is, I don't have a clue. They are keeping that VERY secret. For example, they gave me a piece of paper telling me all the information about where I needed to go, and what I will be doing, reading, working with, etc etc... and they had the title, which I can't reveal as of now, the writer marked as Roger, and producer as Don, but unfortunately, the director name had been blacked out! So I have no clue if Gans is set to direct, or was set and quit, or what... we will know sometime early 2008, that's for sure...
As far as I know, Roger Avary is still the writer. But who knows, he may not be now! After all the online rumors and confirmations and whatnot, I don't know. When I was there, Roger was still writing, so I still believe it's him until I find out otherwise.
Inform8n: Excellent. Is there anything else that you can tell us about the film that you think fans of the series would like to know?
Roby Lee: YES! Um, well, no I can't say much. I don't really know more than anyone else, but I do know that the films plot outline will be based off ONE of the games, can't say which, and the character I'm set to read for, is a made up character... not in the game, but No worries fans... not the lead. The plot on the Imdb is shit. Not true, and very false!
Inform8n: I know you're not officially attached to the project but is there anything (as a fan of the game series) that you really hope makes it into the production of Silent Hill 2: the movie?
Roby Lee: Yes, I hope they will put Pyramid Head in film again... I would love to see the "main" character run from him once again; he shined in the first film for me! And if I'm in it, I sure hope I get a scene with that thing, so awesome! Also, I want to know more about Silent Hill's past... that was an interesting thing they did with SH1.
Inform8n: Well hopefully we'll all get some of the back-story in the new Konami game Silent Hill Origins that is due out in the near future for the Sony PSP. Speaking of Silent Hill, which was your favorite Silent Hill game? What was your favorite moment of the Silent Hill game series?
Roby Lee: Yes I sure hope so, I don't personally OWN a PSP, but I'm buying one, JUST for that game! Definitely, the third game. Everyone loves SH2 the game, but I just can't stop playing the third game! I love the second, it did open a lot for horror games these days, but the third is more of something I can relate to... heather is a teenager, as I am as well... she goes through crazy worlds and I love the film, Jacobs ladder, I see so many references in the third game from that movie. And my favorite scene/moment from the game series, was when James Sunderland is in the elevator in Sh2, and he is stuck in there, and a weird sort of Bob Barker voice comes on, wanting him to play a game, or answer questions, and you the player, has to remember and answer them to get inside a lockbox... that really scared the shit out of me!
Inform8n: Check with us, we'll be reviewing it as it comes out (read "I'm personally reviewing it before it comes out"). =)
Roby Lee: Definitely! I love the site, I've been going there a lot ;)
Inform8n: Now are you still in talks to do something with the Teen Titans movie?
Roby Lee: Yes! I'm glad you asked about that... I have a connection with WB and this person is the one helping me get with an Agency by November, and then in December I'll be working on getting in Teen Titans... it's still in script process, but I'm uber excited. They suggested I lose some weight and watch the new Cartoon on CARTOON NETWORK, also to grow my hair out a bit... which is why it's this long now ... So I don't know what they are going to have me do... but whatever it is... I'm down and excited!
But to be blunt, I'm not signed on for the film yet. Just going to the extreme for the role... I really want it!
Inform8n: That's fine... if there's anything you're not sure about then the following questions are regarding The Teen Titan's movie. So if you're not sure the answer, that's fine, just let me know.
Roby Lee: I'll answer them as best as I can! And definitely I'll let you know.
Inform8n: I know you are in talks to star in a role for the upcoming Teen Titans movie. The other day (July 26, 2007) the screen writer Mark Verheiden is to talk at the San Diego Comic-Con about the Teen Titan's movie script and adapting comics to the big screen. Is there anything you can tell us about the plot of the movie?
And while I know you haven't been officially attached to the movie yet, is there a particular character you'd LIKE to audition for?
Roby Lee: Yes, I haven't met Mark yet, but I really am hoping to soon. He doesn't know anything about me I don't think, but I'm sure word has gotten to him by now, but last I checked he was not worried about casting, just his script. But yes, I can confirm, I am working on auditioning for the character of NIGHTWING. I originally wanted to do Robin, but I was informed Robin may not be in this screenplay. But I have the attitude. Nightwing, this guy is all about attitude. If you know his origin story, you'd know about what has happened to him, and it's very tragic. As far as the plot goes, I'm not informed on what it's all about, other than it will be very dark and take a realistic form, like Batman Begins did. But really, I'm not concerned with the plot, and what it is. I have faith in Mark. He's a good writer. I just want to make sure I'm ready to do my thing when I go in there and show them I have what it takes to play this character, and who knows, maybe I'll be what their looking for. But this whole "learning experience" it's amazing, and it's a summer hobby! So I'm having fun. My mom is watching the show with me and she goes to the comic book places and helps me find the best Nightwing issues... I'm starting to think she's into TEEN TITANS more than I am!
Inform8n: Awesome, it's always great to have a supportive family member behind you. I know you said you haven't heard much but.... Details for the film are scarce online and I know there are tons of fans that would like to know. what all can you tell us? Potential villains? Do you know any of the other parts being cast?
Roby Lee: It is, she is so supportive of everything. And yes, I know fans are craving a lot, but when you're in the process of being looked at for a potential cast, or anything, they don't give you much detail... which I find stupid to say the least. And interesting you ask that, I want to know who may be in teen titans as well! And I heard a very cool rumor, nothing is confirmed, but I heard Deathstrike aka SLADE will be the main villain for the Teen titans! Which is awesome, because I love Slade... he scares me like crazy... so here are some fingers crossed. Also being a new fan of the TITANS, I hope they bring in Control Freak... he's so vile and sick, but his weapon remote is so awesome, I'd like to see Jack Black play him for sure!
Inform8n: That would definitely make the movie pretty wild/zany.
Roby Lee: Yes it would!
Inform8n: I think that's all the questions we have for you. Thank you again Roby for all your time and we look forward to talking to you again in the future!
Roby Lee: Definitely, I plan on it.
